Endangered birds |
|
New Zealand's long separation from other land masses, and the absence of humans and other predators, combined to promote the evolution of many unique birds. With plentiful food on the bush floor, and without the need to escape predators, many lost or almost lost the ability to fly. For some, notably the moa, huia and piopio, evolution meant extinction. Others, like those featured in this general issue series, remain amongst the most rare and endangered species in the world. They survive only through the efforts of dedicated New Zealand conservationists including those of the World Wide Fund for Nature.
